For almost three decades Riffat Alvi has been Director of the VM Gallery Karachi, a busy cultural centre that has had a very positive influence on art in that city. Riffat Alvi is renowned her work in ceramics and the third dimension as well as for the earth pigment technique she discovered in Africa which created great interest internationally. In a layered, contemporary style the artist created a series of paintings: Mohenjodaro, using the earth from the site as medium. She has travelled extensively and shown her work in Pakistan and overseas, including a solo exhibition of work evolved into a complex synthesis of ground earth, resins, oils and binders, mounted at the Commonwealth Institute, UK.
